Résumé
In the XVIth century cactus pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) was introduced in the Iberian Peninsula and today we can find the Opuntia genus plants in whole Portugal. Cladodes can be fed to small ruminants especially in periods of the year when there is low quality and quantity of pasture. On May 2012 an experimental field was installed in Escola Superior Agrária de Castelo Branco, with cladodes collected from different parts of the country (sixteen O. ficus-indica ecotypes, two O. ficus-indica improved varieties and two O. elata ecotypes). The aim of this study was characterize the nutritional value of Opuntia spp. one year cladodes of different national ecotypes and two improved varieties and simulate their use as forage for ruminant. It was found that cladodes ecotypes OFI 4-Portalegre, OFI 5- Arronches, OFI 12-Cacela-a-Velha, OFI 13-Monforte da Beira, OFI 14-Idanha-a-Velha, OFI 20-Madeira and the variety OFI 7-Gialla O. ficus-indica and cladodes ecotypes 21-O. elata-Mirandela and 22-O. elata-Murça are spineless cactus. Laboratory results of cactus pear chemical proximate analysis are : O. ficus-indica species - CP 82,52 g/kgDM (±9,547) ecotype OFI 12-Cacela-a-Velha, EE 15,71 g/kgDM (±1,239) and NDF 198,99 g/kgDM (±13,351) ecotype OFI 4-Portalegre and NFC 665,58 g/kgDM (±13,052) and ME 11,38 MJ/kgDM (±0,163) ecotype OFI 14-Idanha-a-Velha ; O. elata species - CP 94,76 g/kgDM (±3,598) and NFC 554,19 g/kgDM (±47,389) ecotype 21-O. elata and EE 13,77 g/kgDM (±2,191), NDF 261,39 g/kgDM (±14,436) and ME 10,91 MJ/kgDM (±0,159) ecotype 22-O. elata. To simulate diets for lactating ewes and fattening lambs we consider the relationship between the nutritional value and the cladodes amount of spines. The ecotypes OFI 12-Cacela-a-Velha and 21-O. elata-Mirandela were used as the predominant forage feed. Due to the low DM, CP and NDF content we concluded that Opuntia spp. cladodes could be fed to sheep and lambs since associated with dry forage and high CP concentrate
