Résumé
Water is a very valuable resource, essential to the preservation of any life form. However, mankind treats it as an inexhaustible good, using it too often under an irrationalway. Today, our planet is facing severe problems concerning water that can get worse if the appropriate measures aren’t taken.Thus, Rainwater Harvesting Systems (RHS) occur, which are one of the measures for the preservation of water and one of the alternatives for fighting its scarceness. This work is focused on the technical and economical feasibility of a rainwater collecting system for non-drinkable ends, such as toilet flushing and urinals in a building of the Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro campus, in Vila Real.Rainwater will be collected in the roof of the building, in the balcony and in the open deck, amounting to a collection area of 4888.5m2, resulting in a yearly volume of rainwater liable to be collected for non-drinkable purposes of 6476.84m3. This figure is 6.8 times higher than the estimated use of toilet flushing and urinals, which means rainfall provides more than enough for the implementation of the proposedrainwater collecting system.The results of this study show that the execution of an 80m3 reservoir would be able to reduce water consumption in toilet flushing and urinals in between 90.95% and 94.82%.Furthermore, the execution of such a system will allow a reduction in water invoices in about €2475.26 to €2580.58, with a return of investment taking 14 to 15 years, approximately. In short, the implementation of a rainwater collecting system reduces water consumption in buildings, which translates to quite significant economy sparing. Besides the economic ones, these systems also have several environmental and social advantages.
