Résumé
The genus Salvia L. is one of the most important genera of the Lamiaceae family, with more than 900 species around the world and 70 species of Iran with 17 endemic ones. The plants of this genus have antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which are widdy used in perfumes and cosmetic industries. This study was conducted to evaluate some biochemical characteristics like total phenol, total flavonoids and antioxidant capacity as well as morphological properties 25 ecotypes of 11 Salvia species. Total phenols and total flavonoids contents of methanolic extracts from plant samples were evaluated by Folin & Ciocalteu’s and Aluminum chloride reagents, respectively. On the other hand, antioxidant activity of studied samples were determined based on DPPH-free cleaning capacity measurement. The results of experiments revealed that all ecotypes of Salvia sclarea have the most value of morphological characters. On the other hand, Najafabad ecotype of S. virgate showed the highest value of total flavonoid by 34 mg kE/g dry extract. The least value of IC50 (133.14 μg / ml) was about Hamedan ecotype of S. officinalis which have the highest amont of total phenols as 40 mg GAE/g dry extract, too. The results of HPLC analysis depicted that caffeic acid (44 mg / g dry extract) had the highest amount of this phenolic acid among studied Salvia ecotypes. cluster could classify the ecotypes into four groups that all ecotypes of S. sclarea was placed in the same group. The results of correlation between all studied characters of 11 Salvia species showed that total wet and dry weigh had positive correlation with methanolic extract percentage (r=0.51-0.66, P≤0.01) which this kind of correlation with essential oil percentage was not significant. On the other hand, IC50 value had negative correlation with total phenolic and flavonoid (r= -0.57 and r=-0.51,respectivety., P≤0.01). Also, the correlation between total phenol and total flavonoid was positive (r=0.4-0.7 ; P≤0.01). Based on the results of this study, it can be demonstrated that the species as S. officinalis which as the least IC50 or the highest capacity of free radical scavenging with desirable amonts of biochemical contents, could be a good candidate for advanced programs f medicinal and cosmetic industries.
