Résumé
A research was conducted in the semi-arid area of the Hamadan, Iran, to investigate the relation between irrigation methods and the soils using remote sensing data and a geographic information system. in this study the spatial distribution of soils, soil attributes and kinds of land use/land cover were the main determinant factors investigated giving emphasis to the following : (i)- Adapting a geopedological approach for aerial photo-interpretation and soil map making ; (ii)- Selecting sample areas on the photo-interpretation map to be used for soil survey field work and for collecting the required ground truth data concerning the application of the remote sensing and geographic information system. The spatial distribution of the soils were determined by performing a semi- detailed soil survey field work in selected sample areas. Soil attribute maps were derived from the soil map and the laboratory analyses of the soil samples on determinant soil physical and chemical characteristics such as infiltration rate, permeability, bulk density, available water content sodicity and salinity, reaction (pH), and through application of the rule based expert procedures. Digital and visual analysis of the TM images supported by ground truth data collected in field were performed to extract the required information on land use/land cover in the study area on the basis of which the extent of the irrigation methods prevailing in the area were determined. The suitabilities of soils of the study area for the application of the various irrigation methods were mapped on the basis of the spatial distribution of the soils and a number of appropriate soil attributes using ILWIS geographic information system
