Résumé
This thesis presents the research done within the study of lateritics gravel materials used in construction of roads (case of gravel roads in sahel countries). The main objective of this research is to determine the relationship between the physical and mechanical caracteristics of lateritic soils and their behaviour on gravel roads. After choosing several sections of roads which either behave well (susceptible to gravel loss and/or corrugation), in Mali and Niger, we proceeded to study the construction materials in situ and in the laboratory. The first phase consisted in determining the factors which can permit us to distinguish the materials susceptible or not to those two kinds of degradations. The study was done by using classic methods of testing like gradation, Atterberg limits, proctor test, hardness index, CBR test and soil classification systems (AASHTO and USCS). In the second phase, other tests, less common, like the test of maximum dry compressive strength (MDCS, used in Australia) and chemical analyses were used to differentiate the two kinds of materials. Testing with cement stabilization and summary economic study completed this research.
