Résumé
In many countries, problems have been raised by the construction of foundations on clays subjected to seasonal differential movements, of shrinkage and swelling. In England, for instance, it is shrinkage which is the principal problem, while in Canada it is shrinkage and swelling. During drought periods, trees extract water from clayey soil causing a volume decreasing which implies damages to structures. In order to study the water content behavior, we have applied the computerized model (BP4) based upon water duty. For that, we have observed the water content variations of clayey layers at park Maisonneuve of Montreal, and these were compared with those estimated by the model. The obtained results indicate a good agreement between the water contents estimated and observed, which permits the application of the computerized model (BP4) on problems of foundation settlement caused by trees. The use of the computerized model have allowed the simulation of the effects of roots, and subsequently to determine a range of values for cultivating coefficients which reflect the radicular activity of maples
